Kay Ka Rene

SALIGAN condemns the murder of Ka Rene Peñas, father, farmer and champion of agrarian reform.

In life, we joined his work of empowerment and peace and his unceasing fight for justice.  Now, we continue to be inspired by his determined dedication to the service of others and commit ourselves to persevere in the work that lies ahead.

As we seek to carry ourselves through the shock and grief at Ka Rene’s death, we call for justice not only in the case of Ka Rene’s murder, but also for all farmers to whom agrarian reform has again been promised and to whom Ka Rene devoted his life.

SALIGAN shares concerns that hasty conclusions by police authorities will only add injustice to his all too tragic death.  The independent fact finding conducted by BALAOD Mindanaw justifies a call for a more thorough, impartial and formal investigation of Ka Rene's murder.

The state has the duty to protect human rights defenders, such as Ka Rene, and, failing in that, the state must ensure that the killers are brought to justice.

Justice for Ka Rene!  Justice for all fallen human rights defenders!

Onward with our fight for the extension and reform of the comprehensive agrarian reform program!
